About the Campaign
For us, at Sky, the belief that what we do goes beyond the confines of our business is at the heart of who we are. We strive to be a responsible business and we believe we can affect real change.
What we are doing?
Launched on 24th January 2017, Sky Ocean Rescue aims to shine a spotlight on the issues affecting ocean health, find innovative solutions to the problem of ocean plastics, and inspire people to make small everyday changes that collectively make a huge difference. In October 2017 at Our Oceans Conference in Malta, we made three commitments for the campaign:
- As a business, we have committed to transform our business operations by eliminating all single-use plastics from our operations, products and supply chain by 2020. It’s a journey and we know it will involve some tough decisions and complex challenges, but we’ve seen the significant change that is possible by eliminating plastic. By removing throwaway plastic water bottles and providing every employee with a refillable bottle, we have saved approximately 450,000 plastic bottles in a year. We recently launched the Sky Soundbox which is our first product to have single-use plastic free packaging and all further new Sky products to launch will have packaging that is free of single-use plastic.
- We will use our experience in innovation, entrepreneurship and harnessing capital to help turn off the tap of plastics going into the ocean. Through a commitment of £25 million, over five years, we will launch a fund to invest in these new ideas.
- We want to use our channels and news platforms to shine a spotlight on the issues affecting ocean heath and inspire people to make a change in their everyday lives. As part of this we are partnering with WWF to safeguard over 400,000km2 of Marine Protected Areas across Europe's oceans.
Marine Protection Areas
We’re working with WWF to protect and restore our amazing oceans.
Because oceans have no borders, plastic pollution isn’t just a problem that affects far flung islands in the Pacific, it’s spoiling our beaches too; polluting our drinking water and killing wildlife. Our oceans generate our oxygen and provide food and livelihoods for millions of people. They’re also home to incredible animals like dolphins, whales and turtles. But our oceans are under greater pressure than ever before from threats like pollution. No one person or business can solve this, it’s up to all of us, together.
That’s why we’ve teamed up with WWF to tackle these threats, by working to protect special areas of oceans called Marine Protected Areas, to help marine animals to recover and thrive. Together we’ll protect 400,000km2 of oceans across Europe, an area which is larger than the UK and Ireland. And you can help us make an even bigger difference.
You can support our work by donating to WWF to help us protect our precious oceans and marine animals here.
Why are we doing it?
We have a strong history of taking the lead on environmental issues. Ten years ago, we became the world’s first carbon neutral media company and have remained carbon neutral since. With Sky Rainforest Rescue, we raised more than £9million to save the rainforests, helping to keep 1 billion trees standing in Acre, Brazil.
We saw the impact we can have through Sky Rainforest Rescue, now we want to take on another critical piece of the global puzzle for a healthy planet- oceans.
Every minute, the equivalent of a rubbish truck load of plastic goes in to our oceans, it never decomposes and will remain there forever. If nothing changes, by 2050 all the plastic in the ocean could weigh more than all the fish. Our oceans health affect us all so we need to come together to take action and protect our oceans.
