One year into a three-year mission working with Sky Ocean Rescue to help inspire a plastic-free future
One year since the Kia Oval teamed up with Sky Ocean Rescue to help reduce the amount of single-use plastic used at the ground, it has announced it is well on the way to its target of becoming plastic free by 2020. More than 690,000 pieces of single-use plastic have dodged landfill already this year, equating to more than six tonnes of avoided plastic waste from the famous ground.
Having learned that the equivalent of four rubbish trucks’ worth of plastic is dumped into the ocean during just one over, Kia Oval enlisted the help of Sky Ocean Rescue last year to revolutionise the ground and develop it into one of the most environmentally friendly sports grounds in the country.
Tactics developed by Sky Ocean Rescue and the Kia Oval team focused on simple changes with significant impact. For example, a reusable beer cup scheme will mean that approximately 20,000 plastic pint glasses will be saved from the rubbish heap during the England vs India Test Match this weekend.
Alongside this, 14 free water points have been installed throughout the ground – resulting in a 50% drop in plastic bottle water sales this season. If each of the 25,000 Sky Ocean Rescue reusable water bottles being handed out to cricket fans this weekend is refilled three times, that’s a whopping 37,500 litres of water being dispensed – helping to avoid another tonne of single-use plastic*.

Working with the Kia Oval team has not only helped us bring this issue to life for an army of sports fans but also helped them make simple life changes that collectively make a big difference.”
