The 25 Year Environmental Plan announced by the Prime Minister on 11 January has big ambitions to clean up our oceans! The government announced a raft of new initiatives focused on eliminating single use plastics including taking on the burden themselves and making all government offices single use plastic free by 2042. Sky are already on board and have committed to eliminate all single use plastic from our operations by 2020.
Other announcements included a consultation into a tax or charge on all single use plastic, implementing plastic free aisles in super markets and the extension of the plastic bag levy to include retailers of all sizes.
Commenting on the plan Group CEO, Sky, Jeremy Darroch said
“Exploring a tax on single-use plastics and the extension of the plastic bag charge are great initiatives, but we need to see real action and ambitious targets if we are to effectively manage this critical issue. Sky Ocean Rescue will continue to highlight and tackle the damage caused by single-use plastics, and we hope this if the start of a concerted effort by the UK government to take a stand with businesses and help save our oceans.”
